I have it too and no longer worry about junk mail, it still arrives but is
deleted at source and the new pro version has colour coding so you can see
at a glance what's what and it sorts the list and puts stuff in order of how
friendly it thinks it is so there are normally very few to check manually.

Today, I have received around 80 pieces of junk mail. My junk mail filter
catches most of it very well but I still have to check it, of course. Most
days, the number is something between 30 and 50. Is this because
Gardenbanter is reproducing posts from urg or is there some other
explanation?

It is more likely that your email address has been compromised
elsewhere. If you can use a range of email addresses with throw away
ones for untrustworthy correspondents (including Usenet). Then you can
block them as and when it becomes necessary.

Searching for your email address in Google can be enlightening.

I'd be grateful to know of the experiences and opinions of
others on urg.

The last time Usenet posting history was a serious liability was when
Swen infections were at their height. I had to do something serious when
my inbox exceeded 1GB of viral junk mail.

If it is any consolation a few of the dodgy watch ones are getting
through to me. The rest bounce off former usenet and email ID's unread.

I'm not at all sure what reply to make to that but I'll take it as a
compliment. ;-) However, while I don't need Viagra, nor do I need cheap
watches, Cialis, 'hot dates' with bored housewives or college girls, or
stock market tips!! What a plethora of real junk there is 'out there'.

The senders are a bit crafty and try to get around junk mail filters by
various mispellings - e.g. Viagra becomes \/iagra (just one of many
variants). It's a real pain.

Certainly meant as a compliment. Fortunately you seem able to rise above the
garbage that gets dumped on you but I know several people who can't cope
with it and it makes their enjoyment and usage of the internet very
difficult.

I find Spampal pretty good (assuming people are using Windows). Another
good option, I find, is to use Mozilla Thunderbird which has spam
filtering built in (also avoids various insecure features of MS products).

It is an excellent product. The only criticism is that it allows you to
bounce spam back to the sender which used to be the default setting.
Replying to spam is not advisable as it just confirms your email addy as
correct.

If you're on broadband, Popfile is pretty good. It's an 'intelligent'
program, learning what sort of content denotes spam, looking our for the
sorts of words and phrases that are more likely to be spam than genuine.
It makes a bash at sorting into spam and non-spam, and gets it about 80%
right, then you correct the few it got wrong, and in a matter of a day
or two it's up to 99% or better and you can leave it to its own devices.

You don't have to add rules to block specific posters or title contents.
It allows you to add rules, but the main use of those is to direct mails
into specific boxes, eg your 'work' box, your 'emails from urglers' box,
or to allow posts from trusted friends to drop straight in to your inbox
without being screened.
