I'd thought you'd prefer windmills .... I mean, wind energy ;o)

I would if I thought they, and waves, and bio, and... would provide enough
energy for all out modern day needs. But I can't see it happening....we use
more and more electricity for out PC, air conditioning, charging up the
batteries for all our various communication devices - maybe we should ban
mobile phones instead :~)

At least they didn't cost us the planet. Do you think Dubai is being
built from the savings the arabs have made whilst working really hard
feeding the starving thousands? Do you think China is investing all the
money they make out of us to plant more trees?

Wind turbines need Force 3 - force 6 to operate.
There are many days when the wind isn't in this range.

Then use what is stored.

No power stations are able to operate all the time without stopping.

They don't all stop at the same time, when there is no wind.

When there's no wind overthere, they'll be wind overhere. And again, I
do not confirm that wind energy alone will cover all our energy needs.

France gets 70% of it's energy from nuclear power stations. Surplus French
energy is sold all over Europe.

France gets 71 % actually of its energy from nuclear power whilst
dumping all their waste in the ocean.

How much has been generated in the last 8 days?

Dunno.

Near zero.

Rubbish.

Biodiesel produces carbon emissions too. The palm oil it is produced from has
led to deforestation in 3rd world countries. I rarely use my car.

Do you have two children, carry equipment and transport 6 people to
work everyday? And our biodiesel is not made from palm oil but chip fat
made out of rape oil and the oil is not from 3rd world countries
either, but from Europe. And lastly, I haven't driven my car for years.
My husband drives it. When he needs it early for a trip, I use public
transport, hence my wish for a tuc tuc. Out of 16 people in our office,
we're only 2 driving cars and transport each others when required. At
least we're trying.

This is so pessimistic. Why?! When the first cd came out we all said
'blimey, it's going to cost a fortune, it will never happen ...'. Think
of how many other stuff we've taken with the same view? I think there's
lots to be learn still and truly we've got no other choice.

So lets stop using so much electricity! There's lots of gadgets out
there to power your mobile phones and pcs using solar powered energy.
It's not new. As for air conditioning - who needs it?! Stay indoors and
close the shutters. Millions of people have survived doing just that!
Stop building high buildings - the lifts alone uses too much energy,
the materials used are too energy consuming to make etc...

charging up the
batteries for all our various communication devices - maybe we should ban
mobile phones instead :~)

Well, I'd like to see now some initiatives to produce pcs, phones etc.
made out of recycle materials. I think that's Gore's next move now that
he's on the Board of Apple ;o)

I have followed this thread with interest and I have to agree with you
Martin. I know, just a little, about wind turbines and a little about
nuclear reactors.

My understanding is that a nuclear power station may have 1 or more
reactor each of, say, 1500 MW continuous.

A wind farm may have a number of wind generator units each capable of,
say, 1MW maximum output, i.e. when the wind is blowing.

Donc, just one one nuclear reactor may be the equivalent of 1500
windmills at full power, but, no wind, no power and all stored power
sent to grid would not be adequate for even our basic use.

Please explain how this power is stored for future use.

Thank you

You run a pump, which pushes water up to a reservoir at the top of
a mountain, which then can be used to drive a turbine when needed.
There has been exactly such a site in Wales for decades.

Fiendishly cunning, these Welshmen.

Nick Maclaren.

Ha! No reactor then - just a donkey pulling on the rope. That's more
like it ;o)

Ban air conditioning before banning anything else.

This is so pessimistic. Why?!

Rising population numbers
The explosion of the economy in China
The amount of electrical appliances that people use.

I do that, but there are so many people who don't. I see airco units much
more in the shops than even 5 years ago.

Stop building high buildings - the lifts alone uses too much energy,
the materials used are too energy consuming to make etc...

Ummmmmm
I'm not sure about that one, especially if it means even more urban sprawl
than we have already.

charging up the
