I can't think of one within 30 miles of here. They used to be one or
two on every High Street but the advent of cheap domestic washing
machines killed 'em off.

I would expect a sail training ship to be big enough to have a
washing machine, a 20 or 30' yacht not...

You used to find 'em near student accomodation areas, "bedsit land"
but these days student accomodation is purpose built blocks with
100Mbps internet and fully equiped modern kitchens.

In my days of Marine Electrical Engineering, I was called to a massive yacht
in Cowes Harbour for Cowes week. 'We don't have any hot water. We have had
the Immersion heater on for hours'

I started asking a few questions on the facilities and the whereabouts of
everything on the boat, such as the fuse/circuit breaker board. 'We don't
know, we have only chartered the boat for Cowes Week'
............................... "240 volt Generator?"

It ended up that whilst they had a 240 v AC Immersion heater fitted, there
was no 240 v AC Generator fitted and could only be used on Shore Supply, IF
the power supply was suitable.

We used to get a lot of grottie yachties in for 'Ceeowes Week don't know
know' :-((

Didn't know their Sacrificial Anode from their Baggywrinkles, just as many
of them don't :-((

That'll be me in a year or two, I guess Nick is absolutely determined he
needs to have a boat within the next year. :-(

Why not ;-)

Been seriously thinking about another one myself ;-)

Trouble is that since retiring I am so busy and wanted in so many corners
and committees that when would I use it?????

On a Russian sail training ship? Your expectations are wrong.

It is probably better & cheaper to charter than to own a boat.
I have owned boats most of my life and still do own one.

I have repeatedly suggested to Nick that he doesn't want to buy a boat, he
should just hire one when he wants one. He seems to think that this is much
too expensive. Ho hum.

Hmmm - along with raising children, doing a job and keeping an
allotment. Vicky may find her hands a bit full!

:-(
Oh, did I mention Nick has taken up bee keeping now? (Currently in
training, has spent loads on hives, etc, but not got any bees yet)
Add that to him taking over my house with giant demijohns of wine ...
Yes, life and the house are a little bit mad.

It sounds like The Good Life, plus boats :-)

See, the difference with the Good Life - they gave up their jobs! I'm still
expected to work full time as well!

Have you sailed with him? He could turn out to be a tyrant afloat.

Only on a little 2-person floaty thing with a sail.

Yes, life and the house are a little bit mad.

One tip - when he takes the honey off next year, make sure he does the
extracting somewhere where you can shut every door and window and seal
every crack or crevice. If you don't, the bees will soon find him!

That's ok - his parents have volunteered to ave the hives at their house, so
the bees should take 15 mins drive to find him!

The one I am worried about is poor Daniel, who seems to get stung every time
he goes int othe garden already

One big advantage of chartering is that you can pick places with a
nice climate
and ***you*** don't have to spend winters scraping boat bottoms.
Unless ***you*** want to spend every weekend afloat don't buy.

Nor do you have to pay mooring fees for the 48 weeks in the year when
you can't use the blasted thing!

That too!

and if something brakes, it's not your problem.

Only if you run into the back of it.

Just keep an eye on his reaction. Some people become desensitised,

they never go barefoot on a clover strewn lawn........!

I once did a cartwheel on a bee (by accident - lifted up my hand and out it
flew) without getting stung. Obviously I smell safe. :-)
