Sainsburys is very good but Waitrose runs a very close second as the
price of their basic items has come down a lot to compete.

was it your reference to horses that made you think of steak? :-)

For the record Martin i would rather eat chicken, rabbit, duck, turkey
or lamb than steak which i have loathed since my young days when we had
chops when we HAD to eat the fat . ugh ................

Nearest Sainsburys is 50+ miles away, ooh no I tell a lie they have
just opened a store in Penrith 20 miles away I wonder if they deliver
here now? Can't say I've seen any "Sainsburys orange" delivery vans
yet... Checks site, nope part of the 12% of the country not covered.

... but Waitrose runs a very close second ...

Waitrose (or Ocado) don't cover here either, though we could shop
online at Waitrose and collect from Hexham (26 miles away).

Sainsburys, Waitrose (and Ocado), Tesco don't deliver to here.
Morrisons don't appear to offer a delivery service at all. That
leaves just Asda who do, have I missed any other supermarket that
offers a delivery service?

Sainsbury's are always looking for new locations. Got any suggestions?

Not that they would take up, I'd suggest Alston but with maybe 2,000
households spread out over 100 sq miles it wouldn't be worth their
while. We have a Co-op and a Spar (under construction). It will be
interesting to see what happens to Co-op prices and product range
when the Spar opens.

The Co-op?

The local one doesn't offer delivery and doesn't carry quite a few
items we buy every week. Even if it did deliver if the charge was £2
it would be cheaper to go down to the store...

With the likes of Tesco/Asda they are a 60 odd mile round trip
(approx £25 @ 40p/mile, the real cost of running a vehicle) and even
a "quick shop" takes the best part of half a day. If I left now I'd
be lucky to get back by noon.

Down here "milk and more" deliver stuff with the milk. Iceland might and
there's the organic ones like Abel and Cole, though dear and only basic
foodstuffs not processed, they have local deliverers

Milkandmore are quite expensive - especially if you think Co-op is pricey!
Abel+Cole are expensive and don't cover the whole country. But what they do
tends to be very good quality.
Iceland I believe only deliver what you have bought in store - ie, you
visit, pick your stuff, put your basket in a place and they deliver it
some time later. And their stuff is cheap but often yuck.

Nor here, either. And the nearest Iceland is 100 miles away.
There's a general store about 5 miles away, and they deliver once a
week; the local PO delivers milk, papers, and sometimes eggs and butter.
