That's obvious, take the red, the yellow ones are just a stopgap ;-)
Bet the seller sold the lot!

It's become standard practice with Water Lilies over the last few years,
went to a large (small chain) GC yesterday and they sold Red, Pink, Yellow
and White hardy water lilies. Absolutely disgusting, they wouldn't do it
with roses so why water lilies. Labelled like that you have no idea what
variety you getting, how it will grow, and if the flower colour and shape is
what you want. The man that inspired Monet to paint his lilies, Joseph Bory
Latour-Marliac, must be spinning in his grave.

Better to get them from a proper nursery...

Not just waterlilies Bob, Rhododendrons as well. Roses - well most of the varieties on sale I've never heard of.
Tall bearded Iris - 3 varieties in our local not bad GC compared with hundreds in a proper nursery list.
Paeonies 2 varieties, Day Lilies 2 varieties etc....................

Is this the bit where I say support your Nurserymen?! ;-) Seriously,
there's good and bad in both areas but usually, Nurseries are run by
people who love the whole subject and know something about it. Some - not
all - gcs are just supermarkets for plants and what is annoying is that
they are not necessarily cheaper. On top of that, I get out the blood
pressure monitor when Ray sees those "X plants for £15" adverts in
newspapers & magazines. Too often, those plants are either plugs or so
small that they need a lot of cosseting before they can be planted out but
unhappily, not too many people pick up on that beforehand.

The price is set buy what the customer will pay.

If the customer is quite happy to pay £X x 10 and the cost is £X x .5, then
that is what business is all about.

When I was in business my main competitor was charging 3 times what I was
charging and I was making a nice profit thank you very much.

Kindest regards

Mike

Yes I know the varieties of every plant family on sale in the sheds and
multiple GCs seem to be reducing but my point is to just say Red or Yellow
with no variety mentioned at all is absurd. What does the leaf look like, is
it red or green, has it splashes of colour, are the petals broad or spiky,
what does it smell like, .... rant over.

Anyway, repotted my "Peach Glow" today and went down to Lilies and got
another "Gloire de Temple sur Lot", trust me, their picture on the web site
does not do it's beauty justice.

Envy envy.. what a great source of lilies! But look at their outrageous
surcharge for package and postage to here (Arran)

"Mainland UK £6.50

Scottish Islands (inc Isle of Skye), Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland,
Southern Ireland, Channel Islands (inc Guernsey) £25.00 "

spit. Royal Mail charges exactly the same, both directions, for all
postage between the Scottish Highlands/Islands and anywhere in Britain, so
charging an extra £18 is sheer rip-off.

My waterlily lives ! (nameless white from a shed) Leaves now visible
underwater advancing towards the water surface .

Not a problem, Bob ;-)

The sheds and multiple GCs increasingly are selling only those things that are in flower at the time of sale, so the customer can see for themselves exactly what they're getting.

One of my best buys was a "red maple" from Morrisons supermarket for about £1.50 - it is now about 8ft tall with deep red brown foliage - very attractive, and ready to take over from the old flowering cherry behind it which is coming to the end of its life.

Daniel got a Japanese maple when he was born, Bejamin got a cherry tree twig.
We killed the maple last year. :-( The cherry tree is about 8' tall atm.
Not sure what to do with the maple, whether to replace with the same or not.

I think the complaint was about the imprecision of the labelling, not
the lack of variety.

To add to the list of imprecise labelling, selling Hibiscus syriacus as
red ('Woodbridge'), blue ('Oiseau Bleu') and white (not sure which one
this was). I think I've seen Camellias sold by colour as well.
