Smile Online seed companys in the U.k

Hello all,

I was wondering what other people are using to order seed online.

I am thinking of ordering from:

www.mr-fothergills.co.uk

They offer good value for money and dont charge any P&P for delivery.

Would like more opinions etc on what the rest of you guys use.

Cheers

The rest of us guys don't use an organisation like Gardenbanter, with an axe
to grind, to participate in uk.rec.gardening. We joined this newsgroup
directly in order to ensure unmoderated mail. There is a non zero
probability that these remarks of mine will not appear in Gardenbanter.

I'm new to growing veg but I have just received an order from
http://www.nickys-nursery.co.uk/
They were very quick, I sent a cheque and received the order about 4 days later!
Each pack of seeds came with a plant label and they e-mailed me to ask if I got the delivery ok which was a nice touch.

Having not grown the seeds I can't verify the quality but I went on price and the fact that the web site was easy to deal with.

You accessed this newsgroup via gardenbanter. Gardenbanter is a commercial
website. It makes money out of advertisements. The potential advertisers
judge whether or not to advertise there by the rate at which people access
the site. So, to boost their standing, the site runs a gateway to
uk.rec.gardening, resulting in everyone who uses them to access
uk.rec.gardening registering a hit at the site. Since it is a commercial
site, there is no guarantee that post intended via them is not moderated or
censured in either direction. There is also no guarantee that the whole of
the activity in uk.rec.gardening is available at that site. I am also
uncertain of whether there may be time delays before post to and from
gardenbanter arrives at its destination.
It is much more straightforward to join uk.rec.gardening directly.
In short, you gain absolutely nothing whatsoever by participating via
gardenbanter and you may possibly lose something.

That isn't guaranteed to anyone. Most usenet posters access via commercial
ISPs, all of whom would happily make money out of usenet if they could
think how, and who will censor posts and posters that might otherwise prove
expensive to them.

Even Google's usenet archives display advertising. It costs money to
provide information : someone has to pay for it: a lesson that Deja News
learnt too slowly.

If gardenbanter really has someone sitting there reading and moderating
every post from urg by hand, they will either be going bust shortly, or
they are run out of someone's back bedroom, more for fun than profit.

There is nothing wrong or inferior about web-based interfaces. I don't
care for 'em much myself, but some people prefer them.

Same as pink hydrangeas. ;-)

My listing of suppliers online, with comments as I've currently got on
my website is:

http://www.mr-fothergills.co.uk/
An old seed firm, still available in garden centres but not too common
now. Large range of varieties.
http://www.unwins-seeds.co.uk/supplier_search.asp
Another long-established firm. No web ordering, but does give listings
of stockists. Cheap and cheerful. Does mail order and are very
friendly.
http://www.thompson-morgan.com/seeds/uk/index.html
First of the Big Two. Wider range, but more expensive, probably to
subsidise the greater stocks.
http://www.suttons-seeds.co.uk/index.html
The other one :-) Easiest to find in garden centres so don't bother
with mail order unless you want something really obscure.
http://www.dobies.co.uk
Part of Suttons - they definitely have identical catalogues for plug
plants.

Smaller and more specialist firms
http://www.dtbrownseeds.co.uk/
This firm sells virtually identical stock to Suttons at about 2/3 of
the price.
http://www.vidaverde.co.uk
Totally organic smallholders who grow heritage varieties and encourage
self-sufficiency. They do not grow anything that will not generally
come true to saved seed assuming no cross pollination! Priceless.
http://www.marshalls-seeds.co.uk/
Main suppliers for fruit trees, potatoes and other veg. for half the
allotmenteers on my site! They did do web ordering last year, but it´s
vanished again, sadly. May be on the way back as the website is
currently being redesigned.
http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~nfarl...etty/etty.html
Heritage seeds. Some things you can´t get anywhere else.
http://www.seedsofitaly.sagenet.co.uk/default.htm
Franchi seeds, huge packets with even huger numbers of seeds in each.
Very good value and the seeds arrive promptly.

I operate the GardenBanter web site and I can answer the points that you raised.

GardenBanter has never accepted any advertising and I have no plans to do so. The site is non-commercial and will stay that way. I have updated the privacy policy to state this more clearly.

With regard to moderation, I do the following:
Swear words are automatically replaced with **** (I know everyone still knows what they are, but there are a few under 14's who are registered, so I felt it prudent)
Spam is removed.
Offensive messages towards individuals are removed.
Completely OT messages are removed after 60 days (when the thread has gone dead).
These are the only reasons that an incoming post would get deleted. I do not moderate any outgoing posts.

The post timings are quite normal. I have tested across several news providers and the time taken to populate three separate news servers ranges from a few seconds to a few minutes at most.

GardenBanter is a different way to read the gardening newsgroups. I'm not stating that it is better than a newsreader, but I do believe it provides a useful service.
