how's everyone else doing in these gales? It's truly vile down here!

Waaaaaaaaaaah, me greenhouse has bit the dust. Half the panes of glass

have
blown out and smashed to pieces. Greenhouse contents strewn all over the
place. Woe is me!

Oh that's awful - my biggest nightmare!

Ferries cancelled twice earlier....brief interludes of sun between
horizontal rain. It's calm again now but the bay is full of boats
lurking for the night.

Here in Derby I came home to find a horizontal Ash tree! Lots of sawing to
do in the morning. At least it was well away from the house but I suspect a
new fence is required. Carrying plants in and out of the Alpine Garden
Society show in Tottington, Lancashire was entertaining. My dwarf Prunus was
trying to imitate a snow shower.

I always open the door and roof vent when it's really windy. I'm sure I
heard somewhere that it helps prevent the sudden difference in pressure
between the inside and outside, which blows the glass in or out. It may be a
myth but it's worked so far today even though it's raining roof tiles...

Miserable in Normandy. Feels like it's blowing right into the house, old windows...

Garden's taking a beating but so far just daffs blowing over. Won't be all if we
get much more wet. Did get a little digging in this morning, wasn't too bad
when the wind didn't blow me hat off.

Lowestoft: Two in car killed by falling tree. The power to our village
has been off most of the afternoon. Several houses have lost the tiles
from their roofs.

Apart from that, a bit breezy.

Joanne, I am so sorry to hear that.
Here on the west coast of the Netherlands, my plants got to do their
stretching exercises at 9Bft and gusts of 12 and since they are better at
bending than I am, nothing was broken.

Despite living on the coast in west Cornwall, we've not had it too bad
as far as gales are concerned this winter. Certainly nothing like
we've had in the past, and no real hum-dingers that make the whole
house vibrate. I have the feeling that either the met office are
exaggerating their forecasts a bit (possibly for legal reasons, to
allow for the strength of the wind being a bit more than they
estimated, so that they don't get sued when people suffer storm
damage), or the gales are moving north a little, moving up the Bristol
Channel and the Irish Sea and hitting south Wales rather than
Cornwall, as a result of global warming.

as a result of global warming.

or the recent Budget

or the congestion Charge in London

or the Iraqi war

why 'blame' anything. I can remember storms and gales like this 50 years ago
before 'Global Warming' was a buzz word

Late 1940's when Seaview Pier was washed away.

Early 1950's when High Tides and Storms wrecked dozens of beach tents and
boats drawn up on the sand.

Canvey Island. Enough said on that.
