slug control

Whatever you use, be certain to leave a twig or something as a ladder out of the beer otherwise ground beetles will also drown in it -- and they're your friends, because they eat slugs. Here's a question - why do the traps need to be shallow - groundbeetle level ? I've tried just jamjars sitting on the surface, and slugs seem to be able to climb into those ok. Would I catch more slugs if I sank them into the ground ? It could be that slugs are lazy, and tend to give up the ascent up the side of the jamjar in favour of a convenient seedling, but I think perhaps like most inverts they prefer not to be extremely exposed (as they would be on the side of a jam jar) for too long. Try sinking some and see? regards sarah -- Think of it as evolution in action. |
