How about other clubs? Are you having a similar roster of
speakers?

Let us know. Some of us may be in your area. (Isn't it Rotary
who gives points to members who attend Rotary meetings in areas
in which they travel? Maybe we need something like that in
bonsai . . . tho I don't know what the points would be good for
;-)

The Bonsai Society of Brevard has a regular meeting the third Saturday of
every month at 2 PM in the Melbourne (FL) Public Library on Fee Ave. However
the April meeting will be a picnic at a members home. There will also be a
fund raising auction of Bonsai trees, Pre bonsai, etc. Anyone interested
contatc me for diections.

On the weekend of April 26-27, the Bonsai Society of Brevard will have a show
at Rockledge Gardens (a commercial nursery) on US Highway 1 in Rockledge, FL.
The nursery and show are 9 to 4 on Saturday and 12 to 3 on Sunday. At 10 AM
on Saturday Tom Brantley of the Great American Bonsai Company in Ocala, FL
will do a demonstration. Tom will also (hopefully) bring soil, pots, tools,
plants, etc. for sale.
Directions - find Interstate 95, from I-95 take Highway 520 east to US 1,
turn south on US 1 from 520, Rockledge Gardens is a few miles down on the
right.

On the subject of speakers . . . Marty told me (privately) that
the program chair of his club coordinates with other area clubs
on available spekers, etc. That's a good idea.

The Bonsai Societies of Florida do something similar every fall
for the upcoming year, in an attempt to make it worthwhile for
experts to come to this oddly-shaped,
hard-to-get-around-in-economically state. (My club is do darned
cheap (or something), however, that if the "expert" isn't named
Ben Oki they don't seem to be interested. We turned down all the
folks on the Florida list this year. We had Colin a year or so
ago, and virtually no one came. :-( )

Anyway, is there some central point that lists available
speakers, etc.? We tried doing something on the gallery, but
there were comparatively few participants. We have an
experimental "Calendar" offering on the gallery now, but it's
empty.

How would we -- how _could_ we establish a central repository of
people who are available to give programs, demos or workshops,
their rates and fees, their specialties, and the area to which
they are willing to travel?

Is it something we could do on the IBC web page? The NBF in its
"umbrella" role? The WBFF? BCI? The IBC is International, the
NBF is North American, NBFF and BCI are International. They all
have differing official and unofficial "roles".

I'm sure that we all know the half dozen or dozen or so folks who
show up virtually everywhere every year, but I know there are
experts in every state who are largely unheralded (for whatever
reason). How do we make a list like this happen -- AND STAY
CURRENT?

Jim,

What you're talking about is something that I considered trying to set up
with TBE some time ago, but never actually got it going. However, it seems
far more logical for a group like the IBC to do it rather than an
individual.

Since the internet is the one medium that brings the greatest number of
clubs and enthusiasts together, it seems a no-brainer that that IBC would
make a good repository for this kind of information/service. The list of
information you cite would be easy to list and would make a wonderful
resource for clubs all over North America to utilize - to the benefit of
all; artists and clubs.

You have only to begin to accumulate the listing information from the
artists and it is done. Why not get it going?

Kind regards,

This is VERY good point. We have tried to create some cross communication here in New England but I have to say it hasn't worked well yet. There are many events that happen here in the Northeast (eg. every spring is the Mid Atlantic Spring Bonsai Festiva
l; and every Fall is Bill Valavanis' Bonsai Symposium). There are always very fine speakers, demonstrators, etc. and it would be nice to at least have the option of getting one of these for the other area clubs. Clubs that belong to Mid Atlantic have an
automatic tie in but there are other clubs that do not and don't hear about these speakers until it is advertised and, by then, most of there schedules are firmed up.
Way back when (60's, 70's) ABS had a listing of national available speakers, contact info, subject specialty, basic fees, etc. This was great! would be nice to see something like this again.

There are quite a few of us in areas other than North America who would
appreciate the ability to tap into a resource such as this. In the UK
Fobbs keeps a list of our available speakers and their rates. Those
organising an international event would find the researching greatly
simplified by an international listing of contacts and such details as
have been mentioned.

It would also be in the interests of the Artists concerned to keep their
details up to date so that they get maximum exposure.

Great idea Jim and Andy

Yes. I'd like to make it more than North American.

We sometimes forget that the IBC is a much broader community,
though _most_ of the noisiest of us come from this side of the
pond. ;-)

SOME of us over here can be more collegial than others. ;-)

Jim, et al: In July 2000 BCI distributed its International Bonsai
Teachers Register. Then BCI vice president and education chair,
Lindsay Bebb of Australia, coordinated the development and
publication of this project. There had been previous versions from
time to time, but as you point out, it is difficult to keep any such
reference current.
BCI is in the process of revising this registry of bonsai
teachers. While we do this we are working to make the standards for
nomination, inclusion, and maintenance more clear. We invite your
ideas and feedback.
We will be addressing this (and much, much more!!) at the BCI
board of directors spring meeting on 11 April at MABS 2003 in East
Hanover, NJ. Unfortunately, I leave early Friday morning for
Shanghai, China and will be going directly from there to this board
meeting, so I personally will not be able to review your suggestions
prior to the meeting. However, I invite you to send them anyway to
me with a cc to Linda Brant, BCI Executive Director, and Dave
Radlinski, BCI Education Committee Chair. We will review all ideas
and plan to respond to most.
This is a project that by definition and design must
continually evolve, so there is always room for more input.

Bonsai Socieities of Florida has a list of speakers that tour the state each
year. Clubs can sign on or not. I suppose if enough clubs turn down a
speaker, that speaker would not come. Bonsai Societies of Brevard (County,
Florida) is fortunate to have an open mind about speakers, a willingness to
raise money to pay for them and the person in charge of the state wide
schedule as part of our club. This year Dale Cochy came on a day I had to
work, but I got to meet and hear from Walter Pall as well as Ben Oki. We
also took a field trip as a club to Mary Madison's home/nursery in the
company of Jim Smith and Jim Vanlandingham. Michael Perasino was unable to
make the trip as planned, much to my disappointment.
We are also able to get some South Florida masters to make day trips to our
club meetings.
I suppose I am gloating, but I suspect that South/Central Florida has one of
the most active Bonsai communities in the US.

Jim,
I'm intrigued by your letter.
In the first part of the letter you state that your club is to cheap to take
advantage of the scheduled speakers ( BTW, Rob K. does a great job
scheduling it all) and that if it isn't Ben O. no one is interested, and
when Colin was there no one came...

Then you go on wondering how you can get a better list of speakers.??
BTW, BCI does offer a list and I THINK it will be updated.) There is no
end to ways to find speakers, but,

It seems that you (and your club) need to figure out how to get your
attendance up, grow some funds and then make some speaker choices. What
good is a list of 100 speakers if you don't take advantage of them when they
drive by your town, or don't show up when they stop at your town?

Jim,
Well, I wasn't necessarily speaking of me. It sounds like your club has had
LOTS of entertainment pass by. You are not alone however. Many clubs just
can't seem to "get it together" anymore for speakers/programs.
When we have a speaker we always arrange for the demo tree to be raffled off
at the meeting. Some clubs will sell tickets on the tree for two or three
later meetings. I find that people will usually buy tickets at more than one
meeting. Back in January ( I think) I did a pot demo for an Ohio club, and
supplied them with an already-finished pot to raffle. They sold tickets for
two or three following meetings. I'd think they'd about payed for the
program.

You can also have club sales where the club gets a % or buy/sell trees at
your local show. One of the arboretums in Ohio has an annual bonsai show.
Long before the show they buy a bunch of stock and a local club volunteers
to go pot/stytle it and then the arboretum sells it in their outside bonsai
display area during the show. The local club also provides most of the show
trees. ( the arb has it's own permanent collection).

If there are any folks in your club who might be approached as "benefactors"
that REALLY helps and they might donate funds often if they are properly
thanked for their generosity.

There are lots of ways to make money outside of normal club dues, and that's
what it takes to support a good speaker program.

As far as getting people to show up...well, I've always believed ( and told
anyone in organizations that would listen) that you have to really make
people think they missed something if they don't go. If they don't think
they missed anything...then why go to the next one! You really need to play
up the LAST program before you play up the NEXT program!!
Dale
