[IBC] winter care
Hi,
I was just wondering if there is any special advice or impotant things to know for taking care of bonsai during the winter. Is the winter an okay time for pruning and wiring? Thanks for any advice. I will be away for Thanksgiving and there is always the danger of a very early frost. If I wasn't leaving town I would probably wait almost a month. The coldest day I have seen at my place was Christmas Day of 1989. It went to 18 F in the early morning and didn't get above freezing all day. I had fewer plants, didn't have my greenhouse finished, so the plants sat it out in the garage. The electric power company was having brown outs and people who had only electric heat (as I do) were sending their children to stay with friends who had gas heat. We stayed home, bundled up and got through. Jim Smith in Vero Beach, about 100 miles south of here, has a Ficus salisifolia 89. A plant that went through that same cold snap in his place and came back with different leaves. I have got most of my trees in storage in an area between a stone retaining wall and the foundation of the house, mulched with leaves. This will fill with snow and the whole thing will freeze solid. The trees in larger boxes will go against the foundation of the house in another area, mulched with leaves. The coldest day I have seen at my place was Christmas Day of 1989. It went to 18 F in the early morning and didn't get above freezing all day. Typical winter day here. snip Billy on the Florida Space Coast Craig Cowing NY Zone 5b/6a Sunset 37 ************************************************** ****************************** ++++Sponsored, in part, by Carl Rosner++++ ************************************************** ****************************** -- The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ -- +++++ Questions? I do feel sorry for you Craig.... A small portion of my trees will go
into the garage sometimes after Thanksgiving, I guess...(we haven't had that much cold weather...). But while you have idle hands, I will be playing with my forty some tropicals in my heated, "Tree House" and loving every minute of the winter. 8-) Carl L. Ha! I don't really have a break where I can't do
anything. Out here in California, I went out and weeded some of the stock plants today in the bright sunshine, in a sweater, slacks and sandals. I planted miniature iris in accent plant pots, 6” tall when they bloom. Have to put the other bulbs in the frig, or they will sprout. Most of my stuff still has leaves. The elms go dormant in January, if at all. All my maples are still clothed in their red leaves. I did throw a sheet over the succulents as we may have a frost tonight. Then the maples will show winter silhouettes. Kitsune Miko --- Craig Cowing wrote: Carl L Rosner wrote: I do feel sorry for you Craig.... What we don't understand is why you put UP with it. I'd be willing to bet that virtually none of us would ever give up our "winter" season for one of yours. I know I wouldn't. If I never see another snowflake on anything but a Christmas card, I'll die happy. jim - - whose wife is DRAGGING HIM KICKING AND SCREAMING to a snowy Christmas at a West Virginia ski resort. :-( ************************************************** ****************************** ++++Sponsored, in part, by Carl Rosner++++ ************************************************** ****************************** -- The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ -- +++++ Questions? Jim:
What we don't understand is why you put UP with it. I'd be willing to bet that virtually none of us would ever give up our "winter" season for one of yours. I know I wouldn't. If I never see another snowflake on anything but a Christmas card, I'll die happy. I'm in South Dakota. The high today was 18F or so. With the winds, the windchill was below zero most of the day. We just got 5 inches of snow...so 7 inches for the month now. Winters aren't so bad. My wife, daughter, and I were outside yesterday rolling around in the fluffy white stuff. It was relatively warm...around 20F. This is about as far south as I want to live, and my wife informs me that this is as far north as we're going to live, so we're pretty much stuck at this latitude. I can deal with the cold. Add another layer. On the other hand, I hate the heat. After a certain point, public decency laws kick in and I'm told I can't take any more clothes off. The only part that I'd really like to trade away is the lack of sun in the winter. I don't like it when the sun rises after 8a and sets before 4:30p. Next year, I'm going to have to get some tropical plants so I can play with 'em during the winter. I'm afraid to buy any now...don't think they'd survive the shipping. Eric |

I find this discussion of winter interesting. I have always lived where the
winters were mild. (Central Florida and Southern California) except for two winters as a child in coastal North Carolina. I don't do cold or snow. For Thanksgiving I am heading further south to the Ft. Lauderdale area.
