Default How do I remove and replace the lawnmower blade?

When I try to turn the bolt, the blade turns with it. I'm sure there's a
simple way, but I haven't figured it out.

All help/advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Brigitte

I suppose I should have stated that it's a Craftsman Self-Propelled mower.

Thanks,
Brigitte

Hold the blade, then turn the bolt. If you can't hold the blade with a
gloved hand, block it from turning with a scrap piece of wood.

Remove the wire from the spark plug first.

Yes, for God's sake disconnect that spark plug!

Somehow I was also wondering if that nut might be left-handed. I have a
Murray gas mower that I was going to pull the blade from and sharpen/balance
the blade.

To keep the blade from moving, I use a little gadget called "Blade
Buster" that I picked up at the local big box store. It works great and
is very simple to use. Here's a link to one for sale on the web:

Nah, too involved.

What I do is slip a large spanner on the nut and then start the engine to
the lawnmower. The torque from the engine will unbolt the blade.

I guess I am going to get sued now (rolling eyes) - lol.

Seriously if you have to ask how to remove a blade from the lawnmower
probable you need to have a lawnmower shop do it for yah. Taking off the
blade is easy, it's torquing it down to ensure that it does not fly off is
the difficult part.

"torquing it down" difficult?

1. You know your weight in pounds.

2. You know the length of the wrench in feet.

3. You know the desired torque in foot-pounds.

It's neither rocket science nor brain surgery.

some people might not have the strength to hold the blade while taking the nut
off or even taking the nut off even if the blade is locked into place...

Correct me if I'm wrong group but is it absolutely necessary to torque the
nut down? Won't the spinning of the crank torque the blade?

Then they probably don't have the strength to start the friggin' mower.

Yes, unplug the spark plug wire. And also make sure it's not just
hanging loose where it can contact the plug by accident (important
because the wires on mowers are shart and will swing toward the plug
after you pull it.

Basic small engine safety.

In any event, people as you describe should be invigorating their local
economy by hiring someone who has basic knowledge and skill in dealing
with simple machines.

Sigh. Does anyone else think that as automation permeats our lives we
get stupider?

I disagree.

Division of labor creates job, professions, etc Automation in itself is an
end to a means.
