Keeping water hyacinths out of skimmers
Any suggestions other than -- duh, don't put in any water hyacinths! We like
them and they're kind of neat floating around. |

I use those white rubber coated wire baskets from Home Depot in the closet organization aisle. Prevents the koi from eating the roots and they do better (more blooms) when they are bunched together. In short order, you can't even tell they are in the basket. I also use the rubber coated shelves for a long elevated plant ledge. jay Wed May 12, 2004 |

Keeping water hyacinths out of skimmers
Just today I put hyacinths in my pond and got to try out my recent
purchase - a netted hoop for confining the hyacinths so they don't go into the skimmer. Here's a link to the place I bought it.... it's a round, floating net type of device that you put the hyacinths in and the fish can't eat them, and there is a hook on the bottom so you can attach a weight and the floating plants will stay put. Hope this helps. http://www.naturalsolutionsetc.com/g...ther.htm#cover Sue "Remydog" wrote in message news:BZAoc.36613$xw3.2445509@attbi_s04... Hose ring: If you want to constrain the WH, you can make a hose ring by
joining the ends of a hunk of hose with a PVC or wooden dowel insert. You can also get clear tubing at your hardware store. The hyacinths soon hang over the edge and the tubing is invisible. You can anchor the ring to the side or bottom to prevent it from moving. Skimmer separated out: Alternately, you can put a ring around your skimmer...but that is likely to defeat the skimmer's skimming. Stable 'pen': If you can close of a part of your pond, you can put a piece of fishing line from side to side. We a penninsula sticking into the pond with 'legs' on either side. We have some hyacinths penned in there by fishing line accross the end. The goldfish and koi like to hang out under them. They don't float into the pond that way. You can see the penned legs on our website (below) Look on the right side of the full pond photo on the opening page of the site. You can always take 2 pegs on either side of the pond and tie fishing line across, about 2 inches above water level forming a barrier. Plus its almost invisible. Saw this on a website recently! -- **So long, and thanks for all the fish!** |

I believe in the past, some have suggested using a hula hoop as a barricade. Give that a wack..if not you can always use it to relive your childhood. Sameer |

If you can anchor the fishing line below the water level, it is totally
invisible. That is how we did it. Above becomes totally invisible as well once the leaves begin to reach over it. I wanted to keep the WH away from my lilies, so I strung some
monfilament fishing line across the pond about 2 inches below the water. Fastened it at each end with a loop of aluminum wire wedged under a rock. The roots of the WH catch on the line and keep it from drifting into forbidden territory, and you can't see the line unless you know to look for it. I make a loop of fishing line where I do want them.
