Ok. Will somebody tell me what is up with the controversy over
Ironite? In this ng and from some of our local ponders, Ironite used in
moderation is said to do wonders for WH. Now I am seeing all kinds of
very negative and cautionary site discussing the horrors of Ironite.
And, I see there is a "new and improved" formula available.

using Potash. I bought a bag but just haven't needed it. Good Thing, cause
I don't know

I wrote Ironite to ask about solubility implications for their product used
in ponds. If I get a reply, I will share it. Their website suggests that
rats given a high dose orally do not get sick. They attribute that to the
form of the lead and arsenic in ironite. The issue that faces us has to do
with solubility over time and the quantities we use. Would it stay in
locked form if it sits in the pond? Would it dissolve and build up in the
water? Do water changes help? post any reply I get.

High potash value in fertilizer will work just as well. I use sulfate of
potash (0-0-50). I forget the quantity offhand, but someone on the list will
remind me.

As I remember it, the answer was 1 tbsp per 1000 gal per week in high
growing season. Probably varies a lot depending on how many plants are
grabbing the potash for growth.

Ok. That sounds reasonable. I have used pot ash before with no
noticeable effect. Look like I may have not been using enough at once.
So the Ironite is really not considered 'all that' when it comes to
greening up and feeding your WH?
