Default A great loss to urg

I am extremely sorry to read in the raspberries thread that two of its
most longterm contributors, Judith Lea and Sacha Hubbard have left urg
because they are no longer prepared to tolerate the appalling level of
lies, abuse, and threats made against them.

Those who stood by and said nothing should be ashamed, particularly
those who counted both as friends in real life, or have been the
recipients of their legendary generosity with plants, time and
hospitality.

So you will now start uk.rec.gardening.moderated and you would have won. The
gardening newsgroup of your own :-))

Isn't that what you always wanted?

Just think, no nasties. No one you have to say 'Go and look at the FAQ's'

All your own.

You will be very lonely

I wasn't following that thread but am sorry to read the above.

I didn't stand by and say nothing, I wasn't aware of these particular
hostilities (I knew about another but that perpetrator was banned from my
screen).

What I HAVE read, now, on the raspberry thread is seriously disturbing.
There will be more names in my killfile. This won't bring Sacha or Judith
back and I don't know what I could do to help - unless we start another ng
and all of us carefully screen out who we read and answer.

There are always disagreements on newsgroups but what's happened here is
disgraceful. If any action is taken against it or for the others, please let
me know.

Which is what Hubbard always wanted, a newsgroup 'of her own'. She felt that
as she had been here from the year 'dot' and had lessons from Adam, THIS was
her newsgroup.

WRONG

So don't talk about, do it, set up a little closed coterie for the 3-4
of you, make one of you the moderator and you can all sit around
licking each others backsides in peace.

Nobody took much in the way of action anyway. All it needs is a
killfile to ignore posters you can't get on with. If you don't react
or respond they soon get bored. Contrariwise, if you react, shout
them down or disparage their opinions (even if you are right) you just
start a catfight.

I think you should have added "knowingly" in between "who" and "stood by",
but even then, may be people thought it better to not get drawn into a
slanging match or whatever.

For the record, I haven't followed that thread, and the first I knew about
all this was the post I am now responding to. I don't think it is useful
to
attempt to "guilt-trip" us all who have said nothing.

Some of us make extensive use of killfiles and are therefore unaware of the
aggro - I have no desire to read the nonsense spouted by people whose
opinion means nothing to me. If you killfile someone who then insults you,
the magic thing is you don't know or care. I value Sacha and Janet's
gardening comments.

As opposed to the one you obviously want (or deserve), which is
uk.rec.gardening.spiteful.sour.grapes.

I only wish there was a moderated urg.

....

Anyone who posts on Newsgroups for any length of time, should learn
how to set up a kill-file, without necessarily announcing it to the
world.

Attention seekers such as Puce are not going to be made to go away,
simply by virtue of all the regulars simply queuing up and telling
them how obnoxious they are. In fact precisely the opposite. They
know that already, and are being obnoxious on purpose. And they will stoop
to any depths to get a reaction of some kind. The more reaction they
can get, the happier they will be. People like Puce, latch on to people
who are easily wound-up and stick to them like limpets. So long as they
can get a response of any kind.

The only answer to such people is simply to ignore them. And the
only way to be sure of ignoring them, and avoiding the temptation to
have just one more read and get upset all over again, is simply to
killfile them behind their backs.

Use a kill file and do your own moderating.

Don't worry, I usually dog. One of the reasons of course why some of us do
not usually respond to bad vibes.

Not long ago I was involved in a row on another newsgroup and I have no
intention of taking sides and/or getting involved in another one on this
group but I am sorry that Sacha and Janet are leaving and I will most
certainly miss their advice and knowledge :-(

Done long ago!

someone have an off list word with Judith and Sacha after they have had a
weekend to cool down.

they and everyone else should just agree to kill file the obnoxious &
aggressive individuals - any form of interaction (even this post!!!!) is an
encouragement to them to continue.

It ain't a urg thing its an internet thing - some people just seem to enjoy
disrupting otherwise friendly and sociable groups by ad hominem attacks.

Chill!

I was gobsmacked to learn of this. I'm highly selective in the threads
that I read and tend to look at very few. If I see that any are
started or contain 'contributions' from some notorious posters, I
usually leave them well alone and do not return to them. Raspberries do
not fall within spheres of interest for me and it is only your posting
that has caused me to have a look. I then delved further to find other
bits of extreme unpleasantry caused by attacks from the same sources.

It saddens me to see this kind of thing happening on URG. We've had a
few spats in the past, but nothing like this. I've been here for
around 9 or 10 years and always thought of it as a homely place - first
and last call of the day, if you see what I mean. It really has become
sorely tainted by a few malevolent, twisted and utterly nauseous
posters. Incursions from x posters who delight in trying to offend
with foul language and obscenities are another problem. There are
better places to be and that's where I'm going. Bye.
