Default Agave stolen

Went downstairs this morning at about 07.30 and noticed the front gate was
open, looked out and there it was gone.

One of our two large Agave americana Marginata, the biggest one that was
given to me by a friend over 40+ years ago as a tiny offshoot. They have
both been in our front garden for years. Has to have been a "professional"
job as it probably needed two to carry it in it's tall square clay pot, I
use a wheeled truck to move it, and they would need some sort of protective
gear, certainly needed a van or pickup to move it away.

Unfortunately I haven't got 40 years to grow another that big! B'stards

Even better, put it on facebook. We had a carved Hare stolen from a junction
out in the country. EVERYBODY loved it and were outraged when someone put a
chain saw to it and nicked it. A posting on facebook went round the world
and all of a sudden it was found in a prominent place .......

Mike
South East Coast of the Isle of Wight where it has been a very pleasant day.

You might ask the local paper to run an article on the theft, with a
pic of the plant if you have one. Makes it harder to sell, or display.

Janet.

Worth putting this on Facebook or Twitter, if you have accounts there,
Bob. Use photos too. I'm so sorry. What a really filthy person does
this sort of mean little trick.

So sorry to hear that, Bob. I hope you have reported it to the local
police, especially since the thieves were clearly well-prepared. We had
similar problems in our road a few years ago and all incidents were
reported. No-one got their plants/ornaments back, alas, but the
two-legged rats were nicked. Well worth a phone call, I'd say.

At that size it won't be seen locally - far too obvious. It could be
halfway to Cornwall or Edinburgh two hours after it was stolen.

That was my thought, someone has stolen it to order or it's a landscaper
wanting an architectural plant for a job (he will charge the client lots for
it too). Anyway I have e-mailed the local rag with a photo of the smaller
one in the same type of pot and given then the very sad tale, we shall see.

They were informed by email at about 8 am this morning and phoned me back
almost immediately, caught me in the shower, to tell me there isn't much
they can do unless I can find a CCTV of them loading it or driving off with
it. The Dentist on the corner has good CCTV so I'm hopeful but have to wait
'till Monday.

Good luck with that. We have CCTV. It does make a huge difference.

Dummy CCTV cameras are good deterrents and available for less than
£10.

High resolution steerable zoomable CCTV cameras like this
http://www.compagnieshaven.nl/webcam.html
are about £1000.

Yes I know but I said dummy CCTV like this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Byron-CS11D-.../dp/B0015A1APS

I know they work as a deterrent. My friend kept getting her new car
scratched by a jealous neighbour. A dummy CCTV camera stopped it
happening.

Real CCTV cameras get stolen. :-(

Have a real covert camera looking at the cheap fake camera?

Priced between those extremes some of those cameras intended for
capturing Wildlife photos can useful.
Latest generation ones can record high quality video as well. some
models will also take a cellphone sim and will send an alert or photo
to a number you choose , or you can ring the unit and download the
photos although at a lower resolution than the files stored on the SD
Card. Useful if you are on holiday. At about £ 200 -£300 you can have
more than one for the cost £1000 CCTV and they can be hidden amongst
plants.
A steerable zoomable system is of limited use unless someone is
around to steer and zoom it although some will pick movement up and
focus on it automatically. Risk is it will pick on the Burglars
Lurcher while the Burglar is out of shot so are best where there is a
person in a hut or control room like a factory or car park to
ascertain what needs looking at.
For unattended use many security advisors prefer coverage by several
fixed cameras all recording different views simultaneously.
It won't help the OP much but only this week the Harold Hillier
Gardens in Hampshire have announced they have done a similar exercise
because of thefts.
