hiya,
Anybody know where the imitation sleepers made of concrete come from,
and what sort of price they retail at. Thought they looked really good and
wondered if they're cheaper than the real thing.
Thank's in adv.

Didn't see GroundForce, but found these:

http://www.stoneproducts.co.uk/products.htm

Railway Sleeper: A distinctive imitation sleeper with a realistic wood grain
effect. Available in two sizes:

430x225mm = £4.35
850x225mm = £6.55

Bradstone & Stonemarket and probably Marshalls (haven't got their
catalogue to hand) are the manufacturers. You'll get prices from their
websites or from local retailers.

The 800mm long ones were about £8 each when I last bought some. They look so
real that when friends came round they almost always bent down to touch them
because they never believed me that they were made of concrete. They beat
decking hands down and look just as real. They were Marshalls ones...

First time I ever saw this process was as window frames, lintels etc on the
restaurant/shop at West Dean Gardens/College years ago.
Fascinated me, often wondered why it wasn't used more.

The message
from "JennyC" contains these words:

I decided a while ago not to watch GF anymore (boring, repetitive
etc...) so did not see it last night.

Then you lot come along and start on about concrete railway
sleepers..........which made me toddle of to the BBC website for a
peep. Agggghhh blue fences !! And they obviously have a new typist as
well as a new presenter for the show :

"The circle garden
Monday 27 January 2003, 8.30pm to 9pm
The Ground Force team create an unusual graden including a twisting
rill, circular lawns, a pergola and a pig patio"

A pig patio must be fascinating (useful both to organic gardeners, and
anyone who has no room for a compost heap.)Place it under an apple tree,
and surround it with herbs and onions, to enhance the pleasure for you
and your pig.

Next week on urg; how to build a pork pergola leading to the barbecue area.

Janet.

I think we could forgive the typist a "graden".

I watched it, and I thought it was very sweet what they wanted to
do for their (pig loving) friend. I liked the new twist that the
friends themselves did the designing, and I hope it keeps up throughout
the series. After all these garden makeover programmes, surely some
of the nation must have some decent ideas for a garden design by now!

'Twas Mon, 27 Jan 2003 21:53:00 +0000 (UTC), when "Steve Warren - UK

worthy thoughts:

They have a limited 'lifespan' as convincing sleeper
look-a-likes. After 3 or 4 winters, the colouring has faded, the
aggregate in the concrete starts to show through, especially in
trafficked areas, and there can be some spalling.

Bradstone have introduced a look-a-like log edging unit for
this season. As with all these concrete castings, they're ok for the
blind man on a galloping horse, but I prefer the genuine thing.

Ahhhhhh - enlightenment. Not having seen it I did not realise it
actually was meant to read 'pig patio' :~)
I assumed it should have been 'big patio' :~)

No, they really did mean pig. Basically it was a circular patio,
but with a couple of sticking out bits for legs, an ear etc.,
and a little cobble inset, for an eye. I thought it worked very
well - it was as practical as any circular patio. This lady really did
like pigs - she had little ceramic ones all over the garden beforehand!

I have seen fairly similar imitation wooden slabs in the B&Q Warehouse
in Stockport.
Did I see Tony aright - preferring wooden decking to slabs...

You're cracking up, TrevR - I prefer genuine railway sleepers
to pretend concrete copies, and I prefer genuine log edgings to
imitations, but I still despise decking - nasty, slippery, 'orrible
stuff!

Good - the world shifts on the same axis. I can sleep easier. Regards to
the boss.
BTW - found your site useful when I put up my decking - sloping garden,
not bright enough to put up walls, etc.

Regards
