Default Quiet(er) frogs

Anyone have experience with the relative loudness/quietness of Leopard
or Green Frogs compared to Bull Frogs? I hate to sound like a city
boy but they are just too loud at night. I really feel sorry for
those people in Hawaii who have the swarms of peeping frogs.

This web page had some info on various frogs.
http://www.herpnet.net/Iowa-Herpetology/amphibians.html

I've got some bull frogs that I got as tadpoles and I guess they are
all grown up now and looking to get it on what with all the croaking.
If they are croaking all the time does that mean there are no lady
frogs in the vicinity? Do sexual frustrated bull frogs croak more
than satisfied ones? I'm in a desert subdivision and there is no way
"wild" frogs could drop by for a booty call.

Anything out there that is quiet like say a Librarian Frog? It would
need to be able to survive just around freezing Winter temps (air and
water) and Summer peaks of high 80F water and 110F air.

I'm researching the frog thing and will probably get some from a
biological supply company. Might be cheaper but also more
reliable/accurate in terms of species than the local pond store.

I only have a few toads. 5, 3 males and 2 females (and LOTS of tads).
The whole calling and mating thing happens in 2-3 days. Blink and i
miss it. The males call until they get someone to lay eggs for them
and then they go off and/or are quiet and eat bugs at night. I have
only seen one since the whole spawning thing took place. He lives in
ivy near the pond and comes out nightly. I can hear other toads in the
neighborhood without ponds still calling. ....

I get ear plugs under the brand name "macks". If you have an
albertsons around, they have them. They just plain WORK. Any other
kind is crap.

We've got a big ol pile of green/bronze frogs. They make some noise, but are
mostly lazy, so it's just croak here, just a croak there, here a croak,
there a croak...you get the idea. Not much noise but noticeable. The spring
peepers were really chorusly (is that a word?) a few weeks back, but they
seem to have slowed down. Two weeks ago we found our first toad in the pond,
ugly little dude. He has been making TONS of noise for a couple of weeks
now, although he has been silent for two days now.

I find the chatter interesting. I like listening to it, and knowing (now
that I have done some research) which critter is making which noise. It's
especially fund when my frogs start chattering with the frogs in the pond in
my neighbor's yard. LOL.

Bullfrogs, male ones that is, will start croaking when the night time air and
water temperatures get above 75-ish. Around here they seem to be noisiest in
August which is when our summer temps. are highest. And they croak ALL night
long. Kindof sound, to mine ears, like
rrrrunnn, rrrrunnn, rrrrunnnnn.

No lady showed up for him? Do toads get blue balls?

If you find anything out JJ let me know, I am also in a desert

summer! Don't think my neighbors will be too thrilled...

I had a toad croaking LOUDLY for about two days/nights (drove my husband
crazy as our pond is only about a 100 feet from our bedroom window) and then
it got quiet. I went out a couple of days later and saw he and the "lady"
snuggled up in the water. The next day, she left and it was just him, but
thousands of eggs were clinging to one of my pond plants roots. That was
about two weeks ago, now there are thousands of toad tadpoles swimming
around! I thought the goldfish would eat them, but they seem to just
ignore them for the most part. I am a bit surprised with the pump moving
the water so much that they laid eggs there. Apparently they don't mind
laying their eggs with the water moving constantly? My husband is afraid in
a couple of weeks he will be mowing over hundreds of baby toads! Yuck!

I would nearly describe my pond as overrun with green frogs. LOL. We have
had at some counts, 15 sitting by the edge. Some even let us scratch their
chins and rub their backs. LOL. I really want to get more toads. That one we
found was quite cool looking and the noise was great.

I am also hoping to attract some newts, salamanders, etc.

I have a million tads too. They are going to start losing their tails
and just sort of disappear. Just walk the yard before mowing and it'll
be ok.

They're all noisy. :-) I'm sitting here by an open window. The ponds are
only about 12' from the house. The noise of the frogs can be almost
annoying at times. We have several varieties including bullfrogs. When I'm
on the phone I have to close the window.
We can also hear all the frogs from the neighbor's farm pond which is about
100' from our house. There are zillions of them over there. He has spring
peepers in March but none have found there way to our ponds yet.

I'll trade you two young bullfrogs for some. But you'll have to catch
them - wheelchairs and frog catching don't mix.

Frog Update!

Lady Bullfrog is still on the loose. I have clean run out of available teenage
males around my house. One on crutches, the other in the hospital with his
fifth collapse of his lung - we thrive on drama around here.
Anyway today a male treefrog showed up and started croaking!!! That means at
least one of the eggs I adopted from jan's pond last year made it to adulthood
and escaped the maw of the Lady Bullfrog!! Hopefully he will continue to escape
her as Lady Bullfrog's capture will probably be put off until some version of
normal shows up around here.
