need help with planting my first rose bush
this is my first time here. i bought my first rose bush and need some
suggestions on how to plant it . i live in minnesota don't know which zone that is, i have a blue girl rose, it has a rose on it , a really beautiful one that is so fragrant, and a new bud. i'm just in love with this plant and i don't want to kill it. so if anyone could tell me what i should do i would really appreciate it, i know i should have done more research before buying one but i saw it and i just had to have it! and if anyone could suggest any web sites on roses that would be great, thanks ! susan |

Help! not blue girl again.
People get one bloom from this rose and they get all weepy. Unless a rose produces arms full of roses for me it has no place here. Grin!! Back on topic Minnesota is almost definitely in Z4 or colder. And this rose is not known for cold tolerance. So don't get too attached, its not gonna be around next year. You can grow it as an annual. Sorry about the brutal language. -- Theo in Zone 5 Kansas City "Susan Witthuhn" wrote in message ... this is my first time here. i bought my first rose bush and need some suggestions on how to plant it . i live in minnesota don't know which zone that is, i have a blue girl rose, it has a rose on it , a really beautiful one that is so fragrant, and a new bud. i'm just in love with this plant and i don't want to kill it. so if anyone could tell me what i should do i would really appreciate it, i know i should have done more research before buying one but i saw it and i just had to have it! and if anyone could suggest any web sites on roses that would be great, thanks ! susan |

It's a great rose, has survived the decades because one, it's beautiful if properly cultivated, and two, it has a name which no other 'Blue' Rose can touch, and believe me, they've tried. It's kinda like trying to catch a rose named 'Peace'. Or 'Blaze'. Noone's done either. But check out John's site, that'd be a pretty smart thing. As for keeping it alive a long time, plant it in a place with some protection from whichever way the wind blows and plant it close to your house, south facing, and in your best available dirt, for me that's native stuff, I don't bother with mixing a third peat moss, a third premium, and a third native anymore. Put super phosphate or bone meal in the bottom of the hole you use. After it gets going, fertilize it with the cheapest rose fertilizer on sale, or any kinduv Miracle Grow, etc. Never let the hole dry out, water it every day. Good luck. m |

I don't have the time to scan 'Johns' site but I can't imagine he grows blue girl any where but a greenhouse. And all this work will be inconsequential when the d*** thing croaks this winter. And so we loose another potential rose lover. Which zone do you exactly live in lms that you so cavaliarly say grow it with out warning her all the effort is of no use. Having gone thru the heart break of losing 8 potted roses (+1 still in ICU) I would not wish that experience on anyone. -- Theo in Zone 5 Kansas City |

I've seen what you call Vinca listed as Myrtle. Is there a difference? Vinca minor is the proper name for the plant. The common name is Periwinkle. It is a prostrate, creeping vine with lilac-blue flowers. It is hardy to zone 4 and makes a nice ground cover in sun or shade. See: http://2bnthewild.com/plants/H89.htm http://www.mobot.org/gardeninghelp/p...dem/U760.shtml http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plan...nca_minor.html Sometimes the name Myrtle is incorrectly applied to Periwinkle but Myrtle is Myrtus communis, a tender shrub (zones 8-9) with creamy white flowers. See: http://ag.arizona.edu/pima/gardening..._communis.html http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plan..._communis.html -- Henry |
