new boy, no understand?
"Muddymike" wrote in message news What gives here? I joined this group in the hope of expanding my knowledge of gardening having taken on a large (about an acre) once grand, now overgrown town garden. I am now wondering whether to stay for fear of attack from some members of this group. In a few days of membership I have been reading more bitching and hate on this NG than I can recall ever reading elsewhere. Is it always like this? Is it worth hanging around for the garden talk to start? Is there a real gardening NG somewhere? Will I attract the abuse now? Mike I came several months ago Mike as an outsider and have picked up some good ideas and encouragement. I guess you learn to pick and choose the threads that interest you buts its worth staying on. As for other sites rec.gardens, rec.gardens.edible, aus.gardens I also find useful. rob |

Try not to get involved and keep to the good posts. I'm certainly trying to do so .... and I apologise if I felt I needed to back myself. I won't fall for it again. |

you've not been in enough ngs. I find it's pretty standard stuff, if a
thread gets beyond about 6 postings chances are everything beyond that level will be "you're a ****", "no I'm not, you are" part of life's rich tapestry "Muddymike" wrote in message news What gives here? This is a slow time of year in the garden :~) Is it worth hanging around for the garden talk to start? Yes Is there a real gardening NG somewhere? Let me know if you find somewhere that has no flame wars ;~) Will I attract the abuse now? Probably not :~) Jenny |

JennyC wrote: But being American based groups, they do tend to go on about racoons in the corn...........:~)) But you know I like this ) I like when Madgardener post one of her huuuuge post, describing everything around her from her remote garden on the hills. It's wonderful. I had started to print her post to give to a couple of americain friends, to make them feel less homesick. I like when Farm1 gives her opinions from Oz - who knows where we will be in the future? I keep in touch on a French forum too and just love reading stuff from abroad. I think you pick up on what interest you and it needs to be varied, especially in backgrounds, cultures and ages. The latter is very much what has caused problems here I think. Also it's important to not unjustifiably poke at people. We just don't know who the other posters are, what they do etc. and poking at people's lives is a sure way to start flames. I am probably guilty in answering back if you try to hurt me, but that's my nature and on the whole it is human nature. I don't like lies and I don't like people assuming things about others. I am not a professional gardener, I am a keen grower of anything which wants to grow, preferably edible, I work with urban designers and landscapers and spend most of my free time on my plot, on other's plots, in local groups building from yurts to geodesic domes for local school to grow stuff under, care for other people's garden and get involve with anything permaculture. I'm out there and that's where I like to be ) |

This is my first forray into a Newsgroup, but I have for many years subscribed to a couple of email lists centred around another hobby of mine. One is UK based but has several international members, the other is international by name yet most members are US based. Both and particularly the UK list wander off topic all the time which again is not a problem to me as I enjoy reading the other interests of a group of like minded people joined by a common interest. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others who may be new to the topic, and even now after 10 years membership I still learn new things from old and new members alike. My first reading of this NG gave me some very usefull information on pruning yew trees, I look forward to picking up more usefull tips to help me look after this big old garden I have taken on. I will admit to being a bit of a petrol head and look forward to contributing to any debates on power garden equipment. Right, must go start the Billy Goat and clear all these fallen leaves so that they don't clog the grass pickup on the ride on or jam the snow blower :-) (you do allow the odd smiley??) Mike |

I'm not a petrol head but I always enjoy the ride, any rides. If I had one acre, I would feel that justifies getting a lil' cough Dynamow DS Hydrostatic. Bet someone in this house would happilly try to race it, after off course converting it to run on compressed gaz or biodiesel, naturally... A smiley a day keeps the doctor away ;o) |

To be honest I've no idea what it is all about. As with spam, the best filter is what lies between the ears, and applying that you can easily ignore everything but the real gardening stuff - well not quite, I responded here :-) Happy gardening Jim Wakefield main interests fruit |

I only have 1/2acre, and the shredder is my most used and favourite tool. |

There is some bitchuing in most of the newsgroups, it is not worse here than in others. Is it always like this? No, ask a question and you will/should get a number of sensible answers, but as in all newsgroups there are a few who like to stir people up. Just ignore then and add them to your killfile then you do not have to read their comments, ever. The only problem comes when some silly asses respond, then you do get to read the rubbish. Is it worth hanging around for the garden talk to start? Yes! Is there a real gardening NG somewhere? No! Will I attract the abuse now? Perhaps, but stand up like a man and ignore it!(:-) Alan Mike |
