Worst thing is the wind, blowing a hooligan(thanks Sacha for the phrase)and
it is very cold indeed.
We have spent all morning in the greenhouse sowing seeds. We are hoping the
comming season will be better than the last one. But the task is done now.
Our lecky was out from 0930 to 1225, the longest outage that I can
remember.

I've just given up and am skulking indoors! The ground's too wet for
gardening and Ray's done all the seeds. There's no enjoyment being out
in these temps when it's also all grey and gloomy!

lecky for the last 2 days and still no end in sight!

When we moved here almost 20 years ago, power cuts
were routine, usually only up to an hour, but often at
the wrong time. Things are much better now, and I
think we've only had one brief blip so far this year!

When we lived in the country and had a garden much too large to use, we were
fed by overhead electric cables. Every '5 minutes' our power would go off
and if we had a thunder storm with excessive lightning about, then get out
the candles because the trip switch was more "OFF" than on!!

I think if I lived somewhere like that, certainly if it wasn't an
underground cable, I would invest in a generator and ensure I had fuel for a
few days.

There was some poor soul from that area saying she was having to wash
her baby's clothes etc by hand. I's a good job she can remember how to
do that.

You mean she hasn't got more than a couple of days worth of clothes for
the bairn? More to the point you don't *need* clean clothes every day,
though a baby might as they do tend to be messy eaters. B-)

Back in 1981 I think, i was a surveyor with the South Wales Electicity Board
and West Wales got hammered . Here in the Swansea valley my home was off
supply for 5 days while I was working in Cardiganshire 16 hours a day
sorting out HV problems there. The problem with my home supply was a simple
L V line tap that was disconnected but was there was so much damage else
where we had to wait.

We had 5 different Electricity Boards involved in fault repairs.

What I can not understand is why they still insist on
pylons and overhead wires/ Surely underground cables
would be better.

I know they say it costs more, but do they take
account of the costs of repairs and staff overtime for
the current type of situation?

With the expected (promised) weather variations due to
global warming or climate change or whatever they call
it now, such incidents are going to increase.

The supply up our valley is overhead cable, with
branches off up each farm track, with the exception of
one 30 meter section whic goes under my front, side
and back garden - paid for by the developer of our
group of 5 houses I suspect!

More to the point how was she drying them?

Hanging them on the line outside? Very good drying day today even with it
sub-zero, all the hard standing and roads are dry and the snow and ice
reduced a little via sublimation. Big problem is when you bring the cold
but dry clothes into the nice warm and relatively damp house they attract
condensation and end up feeling cold and damp but that soon goes when
hung on a clothes horse for an hour or three.
