Default A question for the group on posting adverts.

In article , Logan
writes

before anyone complains - Logan set follow-ups to uk.rec.hampshire which
is why I've cross-posted.

Would anyone have any objections if I dropped an "advert" for mole,
squirrel and feral cat eradication once in a while? About twice a
month.

Yes, I would. Every two weeks is far too often.

Please read the following from the charter for this group:

Advertising is not welcome, with the following exceptions:
Suppliers of UK-relevant gardening equipment, services or plant material
may post a pointer to their website or invitation to request a
catalogue. This may not exceed four lines. This may be posted no more
often than once every three months. The subject line should begin "AD"
or "ADVERT".

You missed opportunity the Logan, should have included the advert you
wanted to post. ;-)

All the replies to this posting make very interesting reading.

Go and look at them in the newsgroup the posting was followed up to :-))

uk.local.hampshire.

NET NANNIES out in abundance and the ANTI net nannies having their rightful
word.

Even those of you 'highly skilled' in newsnet technique would be advised to
read the follow up in future :-))

All the ad would consist of would be my name and telephone number and
a short description of cost. I'd make sure the subject line said
summat like Garden pest control so as the message can be skipped if
required.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

cheers

Take no notice of the net nannies who think they own and control this
usenet group. Mail your ad. once, if you have no response, mail it once
more, then leave well alone.

Such a nice polite answer. Don't you think it would have been better posted

How very nice of you to ask - many people can't be bothered.
Here's the relevant info from the charter:

Participants in discussions may include references to their garden-related
business in their .sig (max. four lines). "

In article , says...
AND THIS NEWSGROUP IS NOT NET NANNIED????????????

I have just seen a pig fly over my house

Mike,

I'm happy in my gardening, even a seedling is a joy. My work is in IT
and I deal with it all day. As part of my job, I run mail servers and
news servers. I do voluntary work with our local constabulary to help
with IT crime and spam. I'm active where possible in the anti-spam
community.

I'm not really interested in reading about a conflict in beliefs about
how the internet should work in this group since there are more
appropriate groups for those discussions.

You have a huge amount of experience and a lot of relevant input to the
group that makes for interesting reading.

From my point of reading, you have a horrible tendency to attack
anything posted by a couple of posters even to the point of taunting and
demanding they respond.

It seems that there is a rather tired and one sided bating in place that
could disappear if you killfiled the posters you dislike. Those posters
don't 'police' the group, but they express their opinions on the more
off-topic posts as well as providing valuable insight and knowledge
within threads that are relevant to gardening.

I don't wish to add either set of people to my own killfile due to their
value, but one set ignoring and not responding to the other set would
make the entire group a much more relaxed environment.

As Spring approaches, we'll be seeing more activity and more new
posters. We really don't want to drive them off by turning their every
thread into a slanging match between two factions fighting about the way
the group is run do we?

May I suggest that an advertiser, unaware of how usenet works, and
unaware of charters, not having read the TOS (should it apply for
relevant ISP) is allowed to be told of the existance and pointed to
where to read it by a couple of posters (I'll not limit it to one since
it can take several hours for a post to get from one poster to the
next). And then give the original poster some time to digest and post an
'Ah Yes' before starting in on accusations and recriminations.

This thread started with a request for comments on advertising. The
poster was provided with the information they wanted and will
(presumably) be sending us a 3 monthly advert to get some business.

For you to follow up with the message you did seems to be trying to get
your 'net nannies' to bite and get into an argument. I've seen too many
threads degenerate that way recently and probably missed out on
horticultural tips further on down the thread.

If things don't improve I'm going to *have* to do somthing at the server
level to make my own reading easier.

It may be that for this group I start dropping all posts that contain
variants on the phrase "net nanny" and some other key phrases. I tend to
replicate these kinds of changes from work and to other servers I tend.

snip
It seems very probable that Mike Crowe sent the 'Logan' msg. Himself in
order to get arguments started. He's usually responsible for starting cat
threads for the same reason and for posting a lot of other rubbishy
information. For the 'busy and important person' he would like us to

think
he is, he has not only a lot of time on his hands but a rather peculiar
'kink' with regards to newsgroups, it would seem.

Very many thanks for your complimentary comments on that fact that you give
me praise for starting the Logan article.

How does it feel to be totally wrong and up the creek without a paddle?

Cats? Yes toooooooooooooooo true I post about those vermin.

What she is trying to say, and saying very well I must admit, is;

'I know sod all about tracking anyone's ISP or posting information, but I
do like to have a go at Mike because he has a go at us net nannies'

;-))

well done Sacha :-))

I'll tell you how it feels, Mike. It feels fine to be polite to others and
not to spend my entire time online trying to be an idiot. You might try it
some time. I don't think you know what a bore you are. You're the sort of
person nobody wants to be next to in the pub.

So how come then, that time after time you respond when you have told me you
have kill filed me? I will tell you why, because like lots of females, you
find me irresistible and want to sit next to me in the pub :-))
