I had an interest since we did planting of runner beans and cress in primary school. I was about 10. We had a pond in the school so i was quite interested in gardening.
First plant i grew at home was a sunflower. When did you start and what was your first experience? |

At what age did you get into gardening?
My Dad was the secretary of the local Allotment Society and had a couple of
allotments so I was interested from as early as I am able to remember. I had a patch in our garden at home and I can still remember ridding the garden of buttercups. Thinking about it perhaps that's why I never use a rotavator dommy wrote: : I had an interest since we did planting of runner beans and cress in : primary school. I was about 10. At what age did you get into gardening?
We were living in part of a house owned by the Old district nurse in North
Wales at the end if the war(39-45) and every Sunday I would go down To "Nurse Owen" and would sit on her lap on a Sunday morning with a glass of milk as she read me "Adam the gardener" from the "News of the World", I had my own little garden, and started by sowing Cabbage seed, and as luck would have it there were few cabbage plants around that spring so mine were sold and thus I was started on gardening. It was about 4 years later when I was introduced to Rabbit Snaring, and in those days the Rabbit man came round 3 times a week buying rabbits which he crated up and sent by Train to London, we used to get 1 shilling and 6 pence (1/6), which was a fortune in those days. How old was I? well this story started when I was just over 3 years of age... and the rabbit part was just before I was 8 years old. -- David Hill Abacus Nurseries www.abacus-nurseries.co.uk |

I'm not an enthusiast...But I do enjoy collecting the ones I like.... I have about 20 cacti spread about the house now.... Plus all my other plants.... When I first met my now wife I had a LOT more....I used to take 'fying' plants off people and bring them back....Then people wouldn't want them back....So I would keep them.....And I hate to just dump them..... I gave a 10yr old Yukka to my Mother-In-Law....And she kept it alive for about a year...Then proptly killed it..... I went ballistic to say the least! B-) I also had my own 'garden' which I neglected. So Mum started to buy the odd plant which was 'mine' by dotted around the rest of the garden. I never *really* had my own plants as such..... I sometimes *ahem* 'adopted' plants and woiuld spend a little more time on them.... But ither than that I just worked....B-) In teenage years I started to help her more and more around the garden and learnt the basics of veg and pruning. I wish I had payed attetion to what my parents had said..... I was more interested in indoor stuff.... The outside stuff was just one of my chores..... A bit like washing the pots really! But real gardening didn't start till I had my own garden, at 21. I just started when I moved here last July Strange, though - it feels as if I've been doing it all my life, and I can't imagine what it must be like not to be interested in it. B-) |

Keep it like that! the rot sets in when you buy a greenhouse for them ;-) We started by an embargo on buying new plants, and growing them from seed only. That worked for a few years - but then the seedlings started getting larger, and instead of one of each species we now had several! But they do flower well in the greenhouse. Plus all my other plants.... I forget about houseplants. They droop :-( In teenage years I started to help her more and more around the garden and learnt the basics of veg and pruning. I wish I had payed attetion to what my parents had said..... Well, I think everyone feels that! Maybe not about gardening but about something! There's a quote on the lines of 'when I was 20 I was amazed at how little my father knew. When I was 30 I was amazed at how much he had learnt in the meantime' ;-) But real gardening didn't start till I had my own garden, at 21. I just started when I moved here last July Happy gardening! I've not had many flower....As most of mine were in bad nick when I gpot them it takes a while to bring them back....Many of my plants didn't flower for a few years B-( But they do flower well in the greenhouse. *Sigh* I know....I have sen pictures....I look in magazines and online and I want to commit murder very frequently! B-) Plus all my other plants.... I forget about houseplants. They droop :-( I much prefer indoor to outdoor... At least indoor I can control the enviroment a little better! At what age did you get into gardening?
"Kay Easton" wrote in message ... In article , Randall P. McMurphy writes 31 (last year!) I was in my early thirties before I took any interest in gardening. This was not because I was not exposed to gardening. Indeed as a kid I was dragged round nurseries and such whilst my parents bought plants . My mother was always ( still is) to be found in her greenhouse. My grandfather was a Head gardener for a large house. he also had a large garden of his own. But I couldnt find any interest in it until I turned thirty ( my garden for many years was nothing more than a piece of lawn - weedy lawn at that.) |

I've been working on the estate where I am now since the late 70's. I've never had a garden of my own, but I've got about 15 acres of gardens here to play with so I don't miss it too much. -- Pete The Gardener A room without books is like a body without a soul. |

I only really got into gardening in the last few years (now mid-20s), once I moved into a place that had more than a windowsill. Though back in Australia I grew a fabulous crop of zinnias as a child. I was extremely proud of them and have a great picture of me standing next to them with most of them up to my waist in brilliant mixed colours. I learned the names of plants (mostly Australian natives) from my mother who has a mad fascination for banksias, and I picked up how *not* to prune rhododendrons Does anyone know if banksias grow over here? (my mum would be so proud if I managed one) Regards Elizabeth |
