Why does this newsgroup, dealing with the peaceful pastime of 'gardening',
break out into agressive arguements every so often with those 'who know'
stating in no uncertain terms to those 'who don't know', that they are right
and everybody else is wrong?

I see it has happened again with the 'owners' taking sides against everybody
else, even down to a response which will be 'it's not everybody else, it's
just those who are wrong' :-(((((

I have only been using this site for 2 weeks and have mostly just lurked, gleaning some great snippets of information ( thank you all ), but I have to agree with you. I'm amazed at the sniping and backbiting in some posts. Its a shame as its a very useful group to belong to but to tell the truth I feel a bit uncomfortable reading some threads. Maybe I'm just pretty laid back and non aggressive.

Not me, I agree with you.

As with everything there are many ways to do any single job, same with
gardening. When we moved to our present house we were told in no
uncertain terms by our neighbour that we would never be able to grow
blueberries because of the soil.
We still get a fine crop every year.

The moral of that story is 'never take advice from your neighbours'

Actually, you're not using this site. You're using Garden Banter which
pinches the posts to this site and uses them for their own purposes.
As to being 'aggressive', I have to wonder if those who think people here
'aggressive' have actually met with real trouble in their entire lives!
Objecting to people cutting down trees unnecessarily is hardly 'aggressive'!
And objecting to being told you talk 'shit' by someone being unnecessarily
rude and insulting isn't 'aggressive', either.
In fact, there are plenty here who would say that answering persistent
trolls is aggressive as far as the general tenor of the group is concerned
and is, in itself, trolling. You say you've been here two weeks and yet you
choose to answer the most unpopular pest this group has ever, mainly,
ignored. Talk about nailing your colours to the mast.......

In SouthGloucestershire, is that really a county? We used to be Avon. Although I have gardened in a very amateruish manner for 18 yrs or so, we have just aquired a plot ajoining our land of about 1/5 of an acre, which effectivly more than doubles our garden. Its very exciting as its like starting from new again, but there are lots of challenges ahead.
I'm hoping you folks won't mind lots of questions.

Is Avon really a county? I remember it as Gloucestershire (or did it
include a bit of Somerset?) ;-)

What you are posting to is a newsgroup, part of 'usenet'. Gardenbanter,
as it says in the small print somewhere, is merely a 'portal' to

No, indeed! It's often a good idea to wait and observe before making
judgements. If you stick around, you'll get to 'know' the regular
posters, and decide which ones share your values and which don't.

I guess you haven't come across usenet? We are an unmoderated newsgroup,
which means that nobody has been appointed to have sole responsibility
for what appears here. Instead, we have a charter which specifies what
is acceptable, and each and every one of us has a responsibility to
stick to that and to advise other people when they go over the bounds of
what is acceptable. Some people use the unmoderated nature to post
things that are not acceptable, but there is no way of deleting posts.

I have to say, though, that within the context of usenet groups, this is
a fairly polite one - we don't generally comment on the ancestry or
sexual practices of fellow posters.
