Neighbour Trouble
In article , Bill Pritchard writes We moved to this house last spring and have finally turned our attention to the garden. Whilst clearing weeds and debris I came across two electric cables near to the fence. When I asked my neighbour about them he said that they were the power supply to his two sheds. I suggested he put them his side of the fence but he replied that surely it wouldn't matter to me if he left them where they were. I've now asked him several times but he just shrugs his shoulders. Unfortunately, there's not enough slack to just throw them over. My question (finally) is, could I cut through one of the cables (accidently of course) with a wooden shafted spade without electrocuting myself. Yes, but don't put your foot on the spade! But do you ever get power cuts? That would be the time to rush out and do it in greater safety! Alternatively, see what happens if you merely pull with all your weight on one of them. It might detach itself from the house or the shed. I'm trying to envisage the cables. Are they lying on the ground close to the fence or supported in any way? And what is the reason why your neighbour put them that side of the fence when connecting the supply to his two sheds, or was the fence built subsequently? Finally, I suppose one has to ask why it matters to you if they stay where they are? -- Malcolm Ogilvie |

I thought the price was fair and the food was wonderful You must have taken sandwiches :-) In November, we got a free upgrade for some unknown reason from steerage class to a De Luxe cabin with double bed, settee, arm chair digital satellite TV and a *full* free minibar, which included large bottles of red and white wine. Neighbour Trouble
The message
from Sacha contains these words: As a matter of curiosity why do you want him to move them? Is it a matter of safety in your view, or do you just object to them being on your land? What I'm trying to get at here is whether or not this is a sufficiently important issue to you, to risk a major fall out with someone who is going to be your neighbour for a long time, perhaps? If it's a safety issue, tell him so and remind him, as nicely as you can, that he will be responsible for any legal repercussions, such as you, your child, grandchildren, cat, dog or budgie tripping over, cutting through etc. Actually, the best thing to do is to tell your insurance company. He'll move them then, pretty sharpish, I'd think. If something happens as a result of their presence, neither insurance will want to pay. -- Rusty Hinge http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hi-fi/tqt.htm Dark thoughts about the Wumpus concerto played with piano, iron bar and two sledge hammers. You would be quite safe if you wore good, bone dry thick rubber gardening gloves. But don't instinctively put your foor on the spade, except if you have bone dry wellies on same gear as for Cayenne pepper picking? Why are they on your side? How far from the fence are they on your side? For how long a distance? How near to either your house or an outbuilding of yours are they? I like Steve's idea of free electricity. Everybody likes the idea of free electricity. Perhaps it could supply the whole street. Running a tidy little business on the side? Bill Pritchard Retired and Emotional If they are not armoured/sheathed cables, they almost certainly won't meet latest safety standards. Tell your elec. supplier about them and ask them to check for safety. They'll probably cut him off without hesitation. On the other hand I think I'd be tempted to tap in and run my shed/garage off it. Steve |
