Neighbour Trouble
"Franz Heymann" wrote in message ... "Jaques d'Alltrades" wrote in message ... The message from (Bill Pritchard) contains these words: We moved to this house last spring and have finally turned our attention to the garden. Whilst clearing weeds and debris I came across two electric cables near to the fence. When I asked my neighbour about them he said that they were the power supply to his two sheds. I suggested he put them his side of the fence but he replied that surely it wouldn't matter to me if he left them where they were. I've now asked him several times but he just shrugs his shoulders. Unfortunately, there's not enough slack to just throw them over. My question (finally) is, could I cut through one of the cables (accidently of course) with a wooden shafted spade without electrocuting myself. Wearing sound rubber boots you could cut them with an uninsulated tool, though I wouldn't advocate it. One of my fiends used to do just that with small jobs: once, in my shed, we were putting power points in and we needed the light, and we didn't have the keys to the Church Hall so we could borrow a Tilley. We left the power on and were working in the (electric) light while he was snipping live wires happily with a pair of bare-handled side-cutters - until the blades touched live and earth....... *BANG!* -*BIG BLOO FLASH!*- lots of darkness Me: "You all right, Ken?" Ken: "Yes." Power restored we found theside-cutters hanging above the bench, welded to the earth wire. Seriously, why don't you charge him wayleave? He'd pretty soon remove it the wires, or provide you with some beer-money. I wonder if Bill Pritchard has found acceptable advice by now. It would be nice if he would take some time off to let us know if there is any progress on the cable front. Franz Or which ferry route he prefers? Steve |

"Sacha" wrote in message .. . Foxes go into peoples' gardens, Ophelia. They dig in them, they crap on them, they empty dustbins. You may be so busy talking about yourself that you've failed to notice that. At some point, a lot of us who live in the country are affected by foxes, whatever we may or may not feel about the hunting of them. *I* suggest you take your private life to email. It's a polite and reasonable request, after all. I may say that the fallback of every ill-mannered poster is to accuse others of wishing to be moderators and you do NOT break that particular mould, unfortunately. ...... and spam software Sacha; falconry? I notice you ignored those) I suggest you take off your prefect's badge. It must be very old now. I notice you don't like the wannabe moderator badge Unfortunately, you are trying to BE one I haven't seen a vote around here putting you in charge. Maybe I missed the off topic election. Ophelia |

"David Hill" wrote in message ... Could it be that the cable is really for his ferry lights??????? -- David Hill Abacus nurseries www.abacus-nurseries.co.uk ***2004 catalogue now available*** Sad chat up line to start talking about ferries and their routes! Though yes I'd be interested to see some feedback on the original topic. Personally I'd give the neigbour 14 days notice to resolve the issue, that they're liable for any damage or injury etc. or I'd be contacting the local power utilities and my insurance for legal advice. Okay so new neighbour ... but is the next door neighbour seeing how far he can push it! I wouldn't try cutting through the cable as it'd probably be seen as criminal damage, plus the electricity would have to go somewhere ... like straight into the surrounding earth! L |

writes I am with Sacha on this - you have forgotten your manners and are reacting like a spoilt child when this has been pointed out to you. I don't know what has happened to you to cause this uncharacteristic rudeness on your part, perhaps the peculiarities of the season are affecting you. The message
from Sacha contains these words: Why would a gardening group be interested in your travel arrangements, unless it's to a horticultural show? Personally I find the little diversion very instructive. Either you haven't been on Usenet very long, Sacha, or you view it through rose (and delphinium) tinted spectacles. Since the very beginning of newsgroups, threads have drifted. It doesn't take a moment to check whether a post is on a topic you want to follow, and most of the off-topic stuff tends to drift to a conclusion fairly fast. Of course, OPs get a a little bitter (Yes, thanks, a half-pint will do) if others show more interest in the OT drift than their chosen subject.... -- Rusty Hinge http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hi-fi/tqt.htm Dark thoughts about the Wumpus concerto played with piano, iron bar and two sledge hammers. I wish these people would stop using this group as their personal chat room, that's really all it amounts to. That is the way someone has just described it to me in an email and it's an accurate description, IMO. Ask ill-mannered people to take their personal interests to email or at the very, very least mark them OT and it is apparently too much for their delicate psyches to comprehend. But being a bloody nuisance to people who use the group for its intended purpose is apparently, their 'right'. It makes me wonder what on earth they must be like to live with and thankful that I shall never know! We've lost you (mostly) and at least 2 other really valuable posters I can think of because of this sort of thing. It's a really great shame. ;-( -- Sacha (remove the 'x' to email me) |

Ophelia Try to grow up, Ophelia. It really won't hurt you a bit. You may have noticed that I marked that falconry post OT. You may also notice that I and most other posters here do that when we go off OT, as all of us do at times. You and Martin are persistently and consistently OT but without the courtesy of warning the rest of us that you intend to behave as if you were sitting in your own living room. Marking posts OT means that others who wish to skip or kill file OT posts can do so. You OTOH, are so selfish and so rude that you imagine your playground quality one line 'quips' are worth forcing upon us ALL. This has nothing to do with me being a moderator or indeed, anyone else being so. It IS to do with asking you to remember what this group is for and it's not for your personal life. -- Sacha www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon (remove the 'x' to email me) |
