Hello

I know this is an emotive subject and indeed I have already had my
fingers burned when I added a link to an official government petition.
However as this thread already exists I don't see that it would do
harm to add it here!

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/control-pet-cats/

This is a much more level headed one from some of the extreme ones to
be found and as such may get more attention.
If you agree please vote.
If you don't then you need do nothing.

For the record I don't hate cats, I dislike the owners who buy/get
cats for the kids and then leave the cats to roam free.
I do indeed hate it when well fed cats kill the wildlife in my garden
that I strive so hard to promote.
I also do hate getting cats mess on me and finding my plats uprooted.

I have raised the concern, lets see if those in charge of our destiny
can come up with an answer.

Thanks for your time.

I have a cat. I've recently moved it (and me!) from an urban to a rural
location. In the urban environment we would get very occasional kills
(usually mice/shres/voles but one or two small birds).

Since we moved the kill rate has increased. Now, if she was killing lots
of birds I would be worried. However, the majority of her kills remain
mice/shrews/voles. She has also had 3 small rabbits and 1 mole (at least
we think she had the mole, we found the body where she has taken the
rabbits previously and we've seen her catch and eat a rabbit there).

The rabbits are a real nusiance. They damage plants. I don't want her
to kill birds (well, I might not object to some wood pigeons) but if she
can keep down the rabbit population I'm cheering her on. I don't want
her hobbled by having to wear a bell.

But I also have sympathy for people who object to cats. We have some
beds we don't want her to use so we use cat pepper and, as someone else
suggested, short sticks at close spacing.

In the end, I don't know the answer.

But whatever the answer is, .............. it has to please you :-((

Had you thought of ,.... get rid of the cat?
..
..
..
..
..
Oh silly me, that would not please YOU :-(

Can you explain this a bit more? I have two cats, and dislike having to
rescue screaming frogs from them and clearing up rodent entrails, but I
see little a petition will do about the annoyance? If a cat is killing
birds then perhaps a bell will solve the problem. Any other wildlife will
not have the benefit of sharp senses and wings and will not be able to get
away in time.

As for them shitting in your garden, how will a bell help this? Cats do
crap wherever the hell they want, despite your best efforts.

Not if you hit it hard enough with the bell.

I think it's more a case of what to do when she pops her paws (which despite
her recent increase in activity is probably not that many years away).

I don't like cats in my gardens. Yes, it's natural for them to go after
birds but my property is a Wildlife Federation certifed backyard habitat
and I've done EVERYTHING to attract birds, frogs, etc. to my property so
I get VERY ****ED OFF when neighbors' cats come stalking. My 99% Border
Collie does a good job of keeping the cats away when she is outside but
she's really a pampered house dog. My two cats are INSIDE only. They
watch the birds from the windows.

I wish cat owners could control where their cats go...

I am not going to sign this petition. The reason being is that it doesn't go
far enough to control cats and their apparent god given rights to crap where
ever they want. If cats were subject to the same control as dogs, there
would be no problem.
Cats should be kept indoors and taught to use a litter tray. No doubt this
would be a little distasteful for the owner, but it would save the rest of us
a lot of grief and anger. To say nothing of minimising the toll on birds
and small mammals.
Dogs are controlled in their toilet habits because of the threat of disease
present in their motions. I've no doubt the same applies to cats.

This is exactly the problem. I wish cats were like dogs and you could tell
them off when they bring you home a 'present' or even stray into the
neighbor's garden. Unfortunately for cats this has the opposite effect and
the more you tell them off the more nervous and willing to kill animals or
crap in gardents they become. The only resolution is to keep them away from
your garden, whether that be through repellants, motions sensitive lights /
squirters, or strategic planting of pungent plants they don't like.

I'm not one of those cat owners who feels that my cats should be allowed to
kill / destroy whatever they like. Far from it, I hate this quality in cats.
If someone can work out a proper solution to it then I'm all for it.
Starting a stupid petition with no real resolutions and then getting a
couple of like minded idiots to sign it does not solve the problem.

This is probably the only post i've seen in this thread with an actual
workable solution. Unfortunately it would be considered cruel to the cats,
as it would be the equivalent of keeping a dog indoors and never walking
them. Both my cats spent close to a year kept inside before being allowed
outside, and they didn't seem to mind. I can't keep them inside for more
than 30 minutes now!

There we have a perfect example of some of whats wrong with this
society.
This poster has not only resorted to personal insults, swearing and
being just plain rude but now also seeks to intimidate by association
those who may feel they want to exercise their free political right to
bring a matter to the attention of the government!

I urge others to click the message options and report these mails to
google.
I will also be consulting my solicitor today to see if any action can
be taken regarding deformation or slander.

As a reference maybe some would like to look at this web page.
Don't think that a news group (no matter where hosted) is immune from
such action.

I will report back on how I get on today.

Hi Mike

I would just sit back and watch if I were you :-))

You will find that they make complete fools of themselves and fall flat on
their faces :-))

"YOU" will have the last laugh, I have. Amongst other episodes, I had one
try to fling the Data Protection Act at me. Little did they realise that I
studied that yonks ago and they haven't been seen since. :-)

Just sit back and await your laughs :-))

Thanks Mike! I just get so sick of these net bullies!
Google has been amazingly helpful and I have a full record with dates,
time and IP addresses etc.
I don't think it will hurt to run it by my sol today at work.
You are right however!

Thanks

I have to disagree with you - there is an awful lot wrong with this society,
but I don't believe that this is an example of it.

This poster has not only resorted to personal insults, swearing and
being just plain rude but now also seeks to intimidate by association
those who may feel they want to exercise their free political right to

Notwithstanding any criticism you may have, I should point out that history
will show that petitions to the PM do very little, if any, good.

Where did this poster resort to

o personal insults?
o swearing?
o being plain rude?
o intimidation?

I urge others to click the message options and report these mails to
google.

Notwithstanding your criticism I fail to see what Google has to do with it.
Google is merely a vehicle by which one may choose to navigate a newsgroup.

I will also be consulting my solicitor today to see if any action can
be taken regarding deformation or slander.

Defamation. The poster has not slandered, libelled nor defamed anyone in the
above post, apart from possibly the establishment, and most of the papers do
that on a daily basis with no legal action ensuing

As a reference maybe some would like to look at this web page.

I have a suspicion that you're wasting your time, however if you feel
strongly enough, then good luck.

I have a problem with cats defacating and urinating on my garden/grass, but
I don't feel strongly enough to do anything much about it. The cat's
actually quite cute.
