The original Demon team were the best ISP, no doubt about that, but I sense that the techies may have departed the ship as Thus and now C&W took charge. Either that or maybe the spare hardware capacity which Demon used to have has been dispensed with to save money... Demon still has very capable technical support but it is sometimes difficult to get through to them. In over 15 years I have only needed Demon technical support three times. The first call was answered by local support and sorted out promptly. On the other two occasions the calls went to support in India and they were also sorted out quickly. The message
from rjbl contains these words: There does seem to have been an issue with Demon picking up its feeds from USENET for about a month; but it does look as if it is sorted now. I don't think it, necessarily a sign that Demon has gone to the dogs - quite a lot of the Usenet web services have been reporting message replication issues over the last few weeks - could be a sudden increase in global Usenet traffic??? The use of Usenet for political campaigning in the US Election springs to mind as a possibility. NAFAICT - Zetnet doesn't seem to have had any problems with newsfeeds. Usenet in fact, has contracted significantly from what it was only two or three years ago. -- Rusty Direct reply to: horrid dot squeak snailything zetnet point co period uk Separator in search of a sig |

The message
from "BOFH" contains these words: I started out with demon, and the world of Usenet, in 1994,but moved on fairly quickly. I started out with Zetnet about six months after they began - 13? 14? 15? years ago, and I'm still with them. Unlike you, I liked the DOS-based SMTP, and while it is now in the Windows environment, it is just as good as ever it was - plus you can use any other news/mail reader you want, have the SMTP mailbox, POP3, and (I believe) a webmail account too. The last is probably due to the number of failed ISPs Zetnet has caught as they fell. My reason at the time was that newer ISP's were providing all in one windows installation, and pop3 mail....sounds a bit silly now but demon tried to convince users that SMTP in their dos based DIS package was the way to go and to ignore all that fancy windows stuff. Well, it is. It's far superior to POP3 or webmail, and much more secure. -- Rusty Direct reply to: horrid dot squeak snailything zetnet point co period uk Separator in search of a sig |

The number of Usenet bytes is much higher than a few years ago due to all the binary groups. Usenet text is drowning in binaries and spam. I spent some time today looking at other ISPs. But quite a few others that used to have a good name seem also to be going the same way as Demon. Nildram used to have a good name but the latest feedback on them suggests otherwise. The best I've found is Zen. Well, I've always been cautious and won't jump immediately, but I've now got a strategy if the worst comes to the worst. David P.S. On my frequent trips to France I'm still able to get newsgroups from Wanadoo/Orange - and it's cheaper than Demon. the only thing I don't have over there is a static IP. Even Zetnet carries a few - but only if requested. Usenet text is drowning in binaries and spam. It a great pity for those of us who can't spare the time to surf the web! OK, it's not free, but worth every penny it costs. Ask for a newsgroup to be added to the feed (which I have done) and it's generally there on the next day at the latest. You can talk to staff and directors in the (closed) newsgroups, and at least one of them escapes into Greater Usenet... -- Rusty Direct reply to: horrid dot squeak snailything zetnet point co period uk Separator in search of a sig |
